I'grand not kidding."[10] In November 2018, Álvarez discussed sequels to both his Don't Breathe and Evil Dead, saying, "They're simply ideas right now. Nothing to announce officially. We do take a script for Don't Breathe two. That'southward the merely difference. We don't have a script for Evil Dead 2. Just nosotros practise have a script for Don't Breathe ii that we wrote."[11] He also said, "When I tweeted that I was interested in seeing what people adopt. We were having some internal debates nearly what people would be interested in almost. Unfortunately, Evil Dead 2 won. In Jan 2020, Álvarez was replaced as director by Rodo Sayagues, the co-author of both Don't Breathe films, making his directorial debut.[four] [fourteen] In a March 2021 interview, Stephen Lang stated that in preparation for reprising the part of Norman Nordstrom, he worked with The Northeastern Association for the Bullheaded in Albany, New York to accurately depict the mannerisms of someone afflicted with being blind.[xv] [16]

Critical response [edit]

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 44% based on 78 reviews, with an average rating of iv.90/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Stephen Lang remains a thrillingly imposing presence in Don't Breathe 2, but this sequel's story strains to find a sensible manner frontwards for his graphic symbol."[twoscore] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted boilerplate score of 46 out of 100 based on 19 critics, indicating "mixed or boilerplate reviews."[41] Audiences polled past CinemaScore gave the picture show an average class of "B" on an A+ to F scale (down from the "B+" earned by its predecessor), while PostTrak reported 73% of audience members gave it a positive score, with 55% saying they would definitely recommend it.[1]

John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter wrote: "Where the first picture show offered genuine scares, this one is suspenseful at best, snicker-worthy at worst, and will beg viewers to recall the time Fonzie got on water skis and tried not to get eaten by a shark."[42] Benjamin Lee of The Guardian gave the picture a score of 1/v stars, praising Lang as "an effectively imposing physical presence", but described the moving-picture show as "an unforgivably dull piece of product that should never have breathed in the start place", and said that the antagonists were "made as cartoonishly atrocious as possible", adding: "their ultimate plan for the daughter [is] and so laughably repulsive that suddenly, problematically, Nordstrom is fabricated to seem like the amend option."[43] William Bibbiani of TheWrap praised Lang and Grace's performances, only described the film as "a clunky domicile-invasion thriller", adding: "information technology seems more like the filmmakers wanted to purge their creation of its wickedness than tell a story about that wickedness which makes sense."[44]

Jesse Hassenger of The A.V. Gild was more positive in his review of the film, giving it a class of B−. He wrote: "Don't Exhale 2 is more effective—maybe even a lilliputian mischievously insidious—in its attempted villain rehab when it sticks to smaller gestures, like Norman's already established analogousness for cuddly canine sidekicks."[45] Christy Lemire, writing for RogerEbert.com, gave the moving picture a score of 2.5/4 stars, praising Lang's performance and writing: "the well-nigh daring feat of all in Don't Breathe 2 is its attempt to completely rehabilitate Norman. It'south admirable and fifty-fifty unusual that a studio flick would offer such moral ambiguity in its horror hero—and that's definitely what he is here, insufficiently—but the crusade for his torment lingers until the finish."[46]
